THE PROBLEM

You can hear it and you can see it.

Every time someone pushes back from the table there's that scrape, and underneath the chairs there's a fan of pale scratches in the floor that wasn't there when you moved in. Stick-on felt pads are the usual answer, and they last about a month before one peels off and you're back to bare wood on wood — usually without noticing until the damage is done.

HOW IT WORKS

Two minutes for the whole set.

STEP 1

Measure a leg.

Round legs: measure straight across the bottom. Square legs: measure corner to corner, not side to side. Match that number to Small, Medium or Large.

STEP 2

Tip the chair.

Lay it on its side or turn it upside down on the table. Easier than fighting it upright.

STEP 3

Push the cap on.

Stretch the opening over the foot and push until it seats flat. The rim grips on its own. Nothing to glue, nothing to screw.

WHY IT'S BETTER

Against the alternatives.

Against stick-on felt pads — The felt here is moulded into the cap rather than glued to the bottom of your chair. Nothing to peel off, and nothing left stuck to the leg when you take it off.
Against bare legs — A wooden or metal foot dragged across laminate is the single most common source of floor scratching in a dining room. The cap puts felt between the two.

Before you buy

How do I know which size to order?

Measure the bottom of the leg before you order — this is where nearly every wrong order comes from. Round legs: straight across. Square legs: corner to corner, because the diagonal is the widest point. Small covers 1.5–2.3cm, Medium 2.4–3.0cm, Large 3.1–4.0cm. If you're between sizes, go up.

Will they fall off when I move the chair?

The rim is reinforced and grips on its own, but they're a friction fit rather than glued. On chairs that get dragged rather than lifted, check them every few months and push any loose ones back on.

Do they work on tiles and carpet?

Tiles yes, and vinyl and laminate too. Carpet no — felt on carpet does nothing, and the cap will just sink in. Rough outdoor paving will wear the felt through quickly.
