THE PROBLEM

The suitcase closes. Barely.

You've folded everything twice, sat on the lid, and it's still bulging at the zip. Then you get to the other end, unpack, and somehow the same clothes won't go back in. Jumpers and jackets are the worst of it — mostly air, taking up half the case for nothing.

HOW IT WORKS

Pack, zip, pump.

STEP 1

Fill it and zip it

Load your clothes or bedding, then run the slider along the double zip until it clicks shut.

STEP 2

Pump the air out

Twist the valve open, sit the pump on top, switch it on. The air's gone in 10–15 seconds.

STEP 3

Lock it and lift away

Twist the valve cap shut and lift the pump off. The bag stays flat until you open it again.

WHY IT'S BETTER

Against the alternatives.

Against a hand pump — No standing on it, no forty pumps per bag. The rechargeable pump does one bag in well under a minute and works the same on the last bag as the first.

Against a household vacuum — Nothing to plug in, nothing to carry. You can re-pack in a hotel room, which is the half of the trip that usually defeats compression bags.

Before you buy

Will this help me stay under the airline weight limit?

No — and this is worth knowing before you buy. Compression removes air, not weight. Your clothes weigh exactly the same packed flat. What you gain is space, so it helps with carry-on size limits and with fitting more in one case, but the scale won't move. The pump and bags themselves add a little weight.

Will my clothes come out creased?

Yes, some. Anything compressed will crease, and structured items like shirts and blazers crease worst. Jumpers, T-shirts, socks and underwear come out fine. Pack anything that needs to look crisp separately.

How long does the bag stay flat?

For a trip, comfortably. Over months of storage some bags slowly take in air, usually because the zip wasn't sealed properly rather than because the bag failed — run the clip along it twice and check the valve cap is screwed down. If one does soften, re-pump it; the bags are reusable.
